CMS comix colloquium

Dean Haspiel & Paul
Pope
Four indie comicbook artists joined the Comparative Media Studies Department for one of our weekly colloquia. My brother Nick Bertozzi and three of his friends and colleagues—Dean Haspiel, Jessica Abel, and Paul Pope—discussed their work and showed slides spanning their careers.

Because my professor Henry Jenkins was teaching a course entitled Understanding Comics Spring '05 semester, I thought it would be a good opportunity to invite up Nick, Dean, Paul, and Jessica. Between the four of them, they touched on all aspects of the indie comix business—graphic novels, movie deals, Marvel/DC vs. self-publishing, fans, conventions, and much more. All showed slides of their work and told their individual stories. For thorough coverage of the talk see attendee Maclaine's blog. There's a photo he took at the talk too.

My photos at left are from a tour of the Media Lab we took after pizza at Henry Jenkins house (Henry is one of those rare and wonderful professors that opens his home to students and visitors on a weekly basis). Tracy, my classmate who works at the Lab, graciously showed us around what we were referring to as "The Bat Cave." It was a thoroughly mind-blowing experience to see Paul gasp as he saw his sci-fi dreams materialized.
